Playground Supervision

The purpose of duty at break times is to ensure that our kura is physically and emotionally safe for all ākonga. Supervision allows duty kaimahi to respond to any incidents quickly, and ensures ākonga safety and wellbeing while they are on kura grounds.

The tumuaki tuarua organises duty. A rostered timetable is displayed in the staffroom and issued to each kaiako and relevant kaiāwhina at the start of the year, and updated as required.

Supervision guidelines

The following guidelines ensure effective supervision at break times.

Duty kaimahi report to duty prepared and on time.
Relievers are required to cover any duty responsibilities for the kaiako they replace. Duty <teachers> wear a high visibility vest and carry the duty pouch.
Three kaiako are rostered to cover all supervision duties.
Duty kaimahi patrol proactively, and use our kura values and behaviour management procedures to respond to problems as needed. Ākonga concerns and complaints are taken seriously, and duty kaimahi support ākonga who request help.
We treat injury or illness in the playground according to our procedures for managing injuries and illness.
We follow our sun protection practices as appropriate, such as ensuring that ākonga remain in shaded areas if they do not have a hat.
On wet days (declared by the senior kaiako in charge of duty), duty is as normal for duty kaimahi, but senior ākonga help supervise junior classes.
Students are required to sit and eat their lunch for 15 minutes at the start of lunchtime.
