EOTC Consent

Paparoa Street School communicates with parents during the year so they are informed about proposed EOTC events, including any risks, and know how to give consent. See EOTC Event Planning and Approval.

Communicating with parents

We aim to provide parents with clear and easy to understand information about EOTC events and activities. We ensure the level of information we provide parents, and request from them, matches the level of risk associated with the activity.

We inform parents of any general and specific risks associated with an event, as well as our strategies to mitigate risks. We ask parents to tell the kura about any risks that may be associated with their tamaiti participating in an event and provide opportunities to update their health information.

If an ākonga requires additional support to participate in an EOTC activity, we work with parents, the ākonga, and appropriate kaimahi to create a support plan. See EOTC Ākonga Participation and Inclusion.

Parent responsibility

At Paparoa Street School, we encourage parents to support their tamaiti to participate in EOTC by:

• providing updated emergency contact details and information about safety and wellbeing that might be relevant to the EOTC event
• participating in the development of an individual ākonga support plan, if applicable
• supporting their tamaiti to prepare for the EOTC event by talking about expectations of the kura when participating and providing the required clothing and equipment (the kura may be able to help with this)
• contacting the kura if they have any questions or concerns about their tamaiti participating in the EOTC activity.

Giving consent

Each ākonga must have signed consent from their parent before they can participate in the activity.

At this kura, parents complete a blanket consent form at enrolment or at the start of each year, which covers many low-risk activities.

Where activity-specific consent is required (e.g. EOTC activities involving water), we ask for this on a case-by-case basis.

The content of a consent form can vary depending on the type of activity and may include:

• specific risk information associated with the event/activity – see EOTC Risk Assessment and Management
• information about contingency and emergency plans – see EOTC Contingency and Emergency Planning
• procedures to follow in the case of injury or illness – see EOTC Health and First Aid
• information about supervision during the EOTC event – see EOTC Supervision
• information about what to take on the activity and/or what not to take (e.g. money, phones)
• information about relevant kura policies that apply (e.g. Alcohol, Drugs, and Other Harmful Substances Policy, Smokefree and Vapefree)
• information about transport to and from the activity – see EOTC Transport.

We ask parents to consent to their tamaiti receiving any emergency medical treatment, including anaesthetic or blood transfusion, that is considered necessary by medical authorities in the event of an incident. If parents do not agree to this, their tamaiti might not be able to participate in the activity/event (Ministry of Education EOTC Guidelines, para 146).

Personal information collected as part of the consent process is kept safely and shared with appropriate kaimahi/volunteers, and external providers where relevant, in accordance with our privacy policy. See Privacy Policy.

If a parent withholds consent, the ākonga will not participate in the EOTC event. We provide alternative learning options for ākonga who do not participate.
