Health Education

Health education at Paparoa Street School supports our objectives to ensure ākonga are able to achieve their highest possible standard in educational achievement, and to ensure the kura is a safe and inclusive place for all ākonga and kaimahi. We comply with legislative requirements for the development and delivery of health education, including:

Community consultation

As required by the Education and Training Act 2020, the poari matua consults with the kura community about how the health curriculum is implemented (s 91).

We consult with parents of ākonga enrolled at the kura. The consultation process may also include other people the poari matua considers to be part of our kura community.

Consultation process

The poari matua prepares a draft statement on the delivery of the health curriculum, or may delegate this responsibility to the tumuaki, and shares the draft statement with the kura community. The poari matua may use any method of consultation that it considers fit for purpose. The aim of consultation is to:

The poari matua gives the kura community a reasonable amount of time to comment on the draft statement, and then considers any feedback received. The kura takes all feedback into account but does not negotiate on requests that would conflict with our legislative responsibilities.

Once the poari matua has considered feedback from the kura community, they adopt a final statement on the delivery of the health curriculum and inform the kura community. The final statement describes how the health curriculum will be implemented, and notifies parents that they may request to withdraw their tamaiti from parts of the curriculum related to sexuality education.

The poari matua ensures that a health curriculum statement is developed and adopted in consultation with the kura community at least every two years.

Ākonga participation and release from tuition

Ākonga take part in the following areas of learning as part of our health education programme:

Once we have adopted a health curriculum statement, the kura is not required to seek permission for ākonga to participate in the health education programme. Parents/Guardians can however request that their tamaiti is released from specific parts of the health education programme relating to sexuality education. Parents/Guardians are required to send a request to the tumuaki in writing.

The tumuaki must ensure that any ākonga excluded from specific parts of health education is appropriately supervised. The kura is not required to ensure that ākonga who are excluded from sexuality education are also excluded if related questions are raised by other ākonga in different areas of the curriculum.

The tumuaki assures the poari matua that at least once every two years, a consultation with the kura community has occurred, and a statement on the delivery of the health curriculum has been adopted. See Review Schedule and Poari Matua Assurances.
