At Paparoa Street School, our commitment to providing a healthy and safe environment for ākonga, workers, and manuhiri is reinforced through safety and risk management systems on and off kura grounds.
The poari matua ensures, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of workers and that the kura does not put other people at risk (Health and Safety at Work Act, s. 36). Other people at the kura include ākonga, manuhiri, parents, whānau, volunteers (who are not workers at the kura), and those who may be put at risk by the work of the
PCBU (person conducting a business or undertaking). It does not include people who unlawfully enter the premises. Other people should:
The poari matua is responsible for ensuring the kura grounds are safe for people who are on site when the kura is open for instruction, as well as those accessing the site for lawful purposes outside these times. The poari matua is also responsible for providing a healthy and safe environment during kura-related events off kura grounds (e.g. kura camps and EOTC events).
The poari matua consults and works with other PCBUs (such as the Ministry of Education, external contractors, and transport service providers) to manage our shared responsibility for health and safety, and coordinate kura activities in different settings.
