Paparoa Street School
The paramount objective of the poari matua of Paparoa Street School is to ensure that every ākonga at the kura is able to attain their highest possible standard in educational achievement. To meet the paramount objective, the poari matua meets the supporting objective of ensuring that the kura is inclusive of, and caters for, ākonga with differing needs (Education and Training Act 2020, s 127).
We provide learning support for ākonga who may have a range of individual
learning support needs. We take a collaborative approach and involve the ākonga, their parents/caregivers, and others as needed, to best support the ākonga. Also see Inclusive Kura Culture and Poari Matua Responsibilities.
When providing learning support, we are guided by our health and safety policies. This includes ensuring that ākonga healthcare and behavioural needs are met, ākonga are appropriately supervised, and kaimahi are aware of our child protection framework. See Health Support, Behaviour Management, Ākonga Wellbeing and Safety, and Minimising Physical Restraint.
Learning support responsibilities
At our kura, the individual needs coordinator is responsible for coordinating and monitoring support for ākonga with learning support needs, including gifted ākonga.
Learning support coordination may include:
Our kaiako are responsible for planning and delivering programmes and strategies that are responsive to the individual needs of ākonga they teach or support. Kaiāwhina may also be responsible for supporting ākonga in class, or providing support outside of class.
Recording and sharing learning support information
At Paparoa Street School, we record and maintain information about learning support for each ākonga (e.g. professional reports, observations, support plans, hui notes) in our student management system.
The tumuaki reports to the poari matua on learning support needs, trends, and outcomes. Learning support updates are provided in poari matua and hui kaimahi, as appropriate, to ensure we are consistent and reflective in our practices.
We comply with all privacy and records retention requirements. See Privacy Policy, Sharing Information, and Kura Records Retention and Disposal.
Kaimahi support and professional development
We provide appropriate induction and ongoing support in the area of learning support for kaimahi kura. This is part of our commitment to developing strong teaching, leadership, and learner support capability.
We may offer professional development for teaching kaimahi and kura leaders to support the engagement, learning, and achievement of all ākonga. See Professional Development.
We monitor the health, safety, and wellbeing of kaimahi and encourage them to discuss any concerns. See Kaimahi Wellbeing and Safety.
The tumuaki assures the poari matua that kaiako of ākonga with learning support needs have a sound understanding of ākonga needs, and systems are in place to support these ākonga. See Review Schedule and Poari Matua Assurances.
